Excerpt from The Salvation of All Men Strictly Examined: And the Endless Punishment of Those Who Die Impenitent, Argued and Defended Against the Objections and Reasonings of the Late Rev. Doctor Chauncy, of Boston, in His Book Entitled "the Salvation of All Men," &C

If fame men fulfer that punifhment which is the wages of fin, they doubtlefs fuffer all which they deferve. No man deferves more than his wager. In the colle?ive fenfe, they will be tormented for ages of ages; though fome of them only {hould be tormented through the whole of that period; the re/z varioufly as to time, in proportion to their dc There {hall be a difference in the punifhment of wicked men, according to the difference there has been in the nature and numher of their evil deedl'f. He fpeaks of the wicked as liable to pofitive torments awfully great in de g'ree, and long in continuance, in proportion to the number and gramme/3' ofthez'r rrimwi. The p 1rdonablenefs of all other {ins and blafphemies, [except that againfi the Holy Ghofi] lies in this, its being po?ible for men, to efcape the torments of hell, though they fhould have been guilty of thofe fins. Accordingly the unpardonablenefs of the blafphemy againit the Holy Ghof't, mult confift in the reverfe of the pardonablenefs of other {ins - in the impof fibility of their efcapiug the torments of hell, who are chargeable with'this fin. This now being the meaning of the unpardonablenefs of blafphemy agamll the Holy Ghoi't, it is quite eafy to perceive, that even thefe blaf phemers, notwithl'tanding the unp 1rdonablenefs of the fin they have committed, may finally be faved - For if they are not faved till after they have puffed through thefe torments, they have never been forgiven - The divine law has taken it: comfi; nor has any intervening pardon prevented thefzeli execution of the threatened penalty on them. Forgivenefg 9' {trietly and literally fpeakmg has not been granted them?. This kind of finners being abfolutely excluded from the puwlege of forgivencfs, muff, as has been faid, fuffer the torments of another world, before they can be favedgi.
