Excerpt from The General Catalogue and a Brief History of Kimball Union Academy, Plainfield, (Meriden P. O.) N. H: Also a Biographical Sketch of Hon. Daniel Kimball, Its Founder; 1815-1880

Otis Hutchins, A. M., a graduate of Dartmouth College, in 1804, was its first principal. Mr. Hutchins was a man Of undoubted ability and superior scholarship; greatly respected by the citizens of Meriden, and beloved by all his pupils. The reason assigned by the trustees for his early dismissal was, that he lacked organizing ability. His classifications and general arrangements were Often sadly at fault; so that he and his teachers were often working at a great disadvantage. Still, his administration, of four years, was Very useful, with an encouraging patronage.

In 1819, Mr. John L. Parkhurst, a graduate Of Brown Universi ty, was elected the second principal. His administration of three years was conducted amid great embarrassments, perhaps Without fault of his. Much of this time there were no regular sessions of the school; only private recitations of a few scholars. Mr. Kimball had died two years before. His estate, which he had bequeathed to the institution, was in the hands of an executor Whom the trus tees found it difficult to bring to a final settlement. An arrange ment was however reached in 1822. The amount secured from the estate of Mr. Kimball by the institution was about thirty-two thousand dollars Which immediately gave new life and promise to its future prospects. Early in this year, Israel N ewell, A. M., of Durham, Me, a graduate of Bowdoin College, and a student for one year of Andover Theological Seminary, was elected the third principal.

In the second year after his election, in the autumn of 1824, the first academy building was consumed by fire, together with a library of considerable value. The second building, now the wing of the main building, was finished in 1825.
