Excerpt from Management Can Be Human

Industry today is faced with human problems that may hold greater danger than the Second World War. We are at the crossroads where the mistaken policy of selfish economic power and greedy disregard of the individual may set loose a movement from which free enterprise might never recover.

Better human understanding is needed everywhere. In the shop, in the office, and on "Mahogany Row." It is needed now more than ever before between management and men, between companies and nations. Human understanding and the building of men are the greatest need of the world.

The author is convinced that management can he human only when we realize that our workers are human. We must practice some of the things we preach. We must realize that our workers possess more brains and more good ideas collectively than could possibly be possessed by the most gifted supervisor.

The dissatisfaction of the average worker and some members of supervision seems to be centered mainly on a feeling of being "the forgotten man." Their chief complaint is not against working conditions, hours, or rates of pay, but against the lack of human understanding on the part of their immediate supervisors.

Knowledge of the techniques of machine production alone is of little value to supervision in handling human problems because materials and men are at opposite ends of the industrial scale. Therefore, before management can fully utilize individual capabilities, it must consider the ability to handle men as the most important quality to look for in choosing leaders.
