Some serious, Some not, Some not even that! is the first in a series of books which aims to archive and showcase the writings and work of Glasgow-born artist and scul?tor, George Wyllie MBE in his 90th year. Wyllie is best known for his Straw Locomotive and Paper Boat public art projects. Thousands of people every day pass his Running Clock outside Glasgow's Buchanan Street bus station. Wyllie came to his art late in life after taking early retirement from his job as a customs officer in Greenock, but from the 1970s onwards, his output was prolific. After working with artists such as Joseph Beuys and George Rickey, he developed an imaginative and individual way of connecting with the public through his art. On this voyage as artist and philosopher, he has dealt in absurdity and parody, questioned society's orthodox ways of thinking, unearthed the true nature of things, and surpassed the commonality of Western thought in his own unique and unpredictable fashion. In the poetry and illustrations inside this book, Wyllie's humour and sure hand mark him out as one of the most important artists of the late 20th century. George Wyllie MBE (born Glasgow 1921) lives in Inverclyde, Scotland. 'George Wyllie is a seriously playful artist' - Liz Lochhead, Scotland's Makar (national poet) 'These wise odes, whether serious or not, are best hummed to the imagined strum of the Hawaiian Clarsach, the wry bard's name for his Ukelele. That's a word meaning 'jumping flea' in those far off Pacific islands, itself a poetic stroke of Wyllie's surreal magic. - Murray Grigor, Film maker 'This collection of poems and illustrations by George Wyllie will make you ask questions and have you laughing out loud in equal measure. Wyllie loves to draw with words and, on paper, he has as fine a line as he does in steel.' - Jan Patience. Arts writer
