Since the early 1980s, the Chinese government has tried to restructure the incentive systems for firms, increase autonomy for managers, reform products and markets and reform the ownership structure of State firms. These firms were intended to change firms, especially State-owned enterprises (SOEs), into more commercially oriented businesses. As economic reform in China advances, the practices of firms in the marketplace have provided important research topics in business strategy and public policy. Business strategy and the pattern of corporate governance are the two major internal reform measures needed to improve the performance of firms. The overall purpose of this book is to examine these two areas of change and their relationship for Chinese firms in the CE sector at this juncture in the reform sector. Through the use of case studies, interviews and an analysis of documentary materials, the authors review the business strategies and examine the practices of Chinese firms in the area of corporate governance in the CE sector, identify different paths of development of firms in the Chinese context and enable policy issues to be better informed.
