The English people, years and years ago--about i750, were the ones who began to realize that draperies, chintz, added much to the beauty of a home, so when you are selling Colonial draperies you are not selling goods by the yard, you are selling furnishings, you are selling sunshine, you are selling beauty, you are selling individuality and personality to that customer. It means a big range of idealistic things that we have got to study. Now, to show you one of the earliest designs in Colonial draperies we will show you the difference, the range from the simple chintz which the English people used to make and used to hand block, one of the earliest designs, perhaps, that the English people used. They used a hand block machine for it. Now it has the appearance of the hand block and yet it goes through our wonderful roller processes which turn out hundreds of yards in a day. Your customer will ask you a number of questions. Will this wash? You can tell her without any reserve that it has been washed, steamed, calendered and dried more than it would be in an ordinary home laundry, certainly it will wash! Will this color fade when I hang it in a window? You may tell her without reserve that these colors are, some of them, superalizarin dyes; they will stand the highest test of laundering and sunshine of any textile fabric known. You need have no reserve about the value of these Colonial draperies made for Marshall Field & Company. Suppose this second type of customer who thinks she knows, has a living room and wants to furnish it and decides this is the thing she want to have in her room. You wouldn't sell her this. It has many advantages that would do for an intimate bed-room, a lady's boudoir, but for a living room it lacks color and character; it would soil...
