Excerpt from Meetings of the International Advisory Board: Opening of the Museum by President McKinley and Addresses Made at the Banquet

One of the greatest Obstacles in the development of trade with South American, African, Australian, and Eastern markets has been the lack of knowledge on the part of our manufacturers as to the exact requirements of this feature of our commerce, and until the establishment of this institution there had been no means by which the manufacturers might gain this knowledge without incurring the great expense of. Sending a man to make personal investigations.

In the work undertaken we have opened Up a number of channels through which this information can be procured. First, through our close connections with the local chambers of com merce throughout all Latin America - such bodies as you gentle men here with us to-day represent. This is a reciprocal service, as this bureau is glad to supply all foreign merchants and trade 'organizations with accurate information in regard to American manufactured goods, and also in regard to the possibilities of the introduction and sale of all classes Of raw materials.

Another source of information is our library and journal room, where we now have on file about nine hundred of the lead ing trade publications of the world, representing every interest and coming from everywhere, the Official documents of all coun tries, and the consular reports of all nations. The great value of this plan is that by its means we frequently have reports on exactly the same market from perhaps a half a dozen different Sources, each viewing the trade possibilities from the standpoint of individual interest. A careful study Of all of these reports ena bles us to ascertain actual facts and conditions as they may at the moment exist. To make all this mass of information quickly available, we have trained a corps of competent persons, who are constantly at work reading and compiling from these publica tions and reports, commercial facts which may be of interest and importance to the various branches of business.
