Excerpt from Colonial Laws and Courts: With a Sketch of the Legal Systems of the World and Tables of Conditions of Appeal to the Privy Council

This book, which also forms the introductory volume of the new edition of Surges Commentaries on Colonial and Foreign Laws, is now issued separately, as there seems reason to expect that it, will have interest for a wider circle than the remainder of that work.

The Editors desire to acknowledge the valuable co-operation of their collaborators who have brought special knowledge to bear on the different legal systems in force in the British dominions: the late Dr. H. M. Birdwood (whose loss is deeply deplored by his colleagues), who wrote the chapters on the laws and courts of the Empire of India; Dr. Bisschop, who contributed the chapter on Eoman-Dutch law; Mr. James Macdonald, who assisted with the law of Scotland, Professor J. S. Walton with the law of Quebec, Professor McGregor Young and Professor A. H. E. Lefroy with the law of the other provinces of the Dominion of Canada, and Mr. J. E. Hogg with the Australian law.

The Editors have also to express their indebtedness to many gentlemen for advice and assistance in the revision of portions of this volume dealing with the legal systems of particular British Colonies and States. Among these we may venture to mention Sir Joseph Hutchinson, Chief Justice of Ceylon; Sir Francis Piggott, Chief Justice of Hong Kong; Sir Lionel Cox, sometime Chief Justice of the Straits Settlements; his Honour Judge Stevenson Moore, First Deemster of the Isle of Man; Sir Dennis Fitzpatrick, K.C.S.I., Member of the Council of India; Sir Eoland Wilson, Bart., formerly Eeader of Indian Law at Cambridge University; Sir Eaymond West, K.C.I.E., Eeader of Indian Law at Cambridge University, formerly Judge of the High Court of Bombay; Sir John Jardine, M.P., K.C.I.E., formerly Judge of the High Court of Bombay; Mr. F.G. Wigley, of the English Bar, for revision of the chapters on the Indian Empire; Sir W.H. Greaves, Chief Justice of Barbados; Mr. E.Bateson, formerly Attorney-General of St.
