In this new era - post Section 28 and post the new Civil Partnership Act - how much has in fact changed for gay men and lesbians? A number of successful lesbians and gay men, drawn from a variety of walks of life, have been invited to write about how it is for them - how they live now. In achieving their professional and personal ambitions, how has being gay made a difference, positively and negatively? How much residual homophobia and how much resistance to the exercise of their human rights and full dignity as human beings have they encountered? Are there walks of life in which being gay is advantage? Is there a kind of 'gay mafia', a freemasonry in which people can advance their ambitions by plugging into a network? If the 20th Century was the century in which women were finally recognised as full human beings with rights to equal opportunities, perhaps the 21st Century will be the one in which the same happens for gay people.
