Anglo Files, named in playful homage to the cause of wide-ranging cultural espionage for benign purposes, would not exist without the advanced wisdom, generosity and goodwill of the featured architectural practices and their staff, to whom I am hugely grateful. Innumerable professional peers freely gave me their shrewd insights and facilitated meetings and visits of benefit to the project. Lucas Dietrich, my stalwart and good-humoured commissioning editor, gave me consistent support and encouragement throughout. Graphic designer and trapeze artiste Melanie Mues confidently shook up architectural book design orthodoxies with her conceptual agility and grasp of visual pacing, without losing sight of the rigour that must accompany it. Thanks are also due to Gemma Davies, Alice Park, Catherine Hall and Jane Cutter at Thames & Hudson. For supporting my research and writing through a grant, I am most grateful to the Arts Council of England and the Trustees of the Oppenheim-John Downes Memorial Trust, as I am to JAL Airlines and the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation for enthusiastically sponsoring my Japanese research trips. The clear friendship of Dan Knight, Christine Stymau, Shona Kitchen, Fiona Dunlop,Tobias Kommerell, DanielleTinero, Nico Macdonald andTorsten Neeland made the crossing seem far more navigable, and, for their solidarity and presence, a resonant thanks to my father Dargan and mother Pat-their Architectural Association-trained architectural genes seem to be wearing well - and my sibling posse Helena, Alexander and Victoria.
