"Women in Love" is the sequel to Lawrence's earlier novel, "The Rainbow", and even though it is best read after the earlier volume, it can still be enjoyed and understood on its own. Considered by many to be Lawrence's greatest work, it tells the powerful and involving story of two independent and spirited women, Ursula and Gudrun Brangwen, and their sexual and emotional relationships with a pair of friends, Rupert Birkin and Gerald Crich. At the beginning of the novel, Ursula and Gudrun are both teachers at a small school in Nottinghamshire, while the men, socially their superiors, are an educational inspector and the owner-operator of a coalmine. The basic plot may sound similar to that of a straightforward romance, but there is in fact nothing conventional about Lawrence's novel. Blending abstract ideas with haunting symbolism, Women in Love is a rich and challenging investigation into the complexities of love and friendship.
