The Impressionists were the first revolution-aries of modern art. The Establishment of the 1870s, the French Academy, had firmly fixed ideas of what an artist should paint and how he should paint it, and these ideas were happily accepted by the public, the critics, and nearly every successful painter of the day. In daring to challenge these rigid attitudes by looking at the world about them with fresh eyes, the Impres-sionists drew upon themselves a storm of abuse and ridicule.
Today it is difficult to see what all the fuss was about, for the paintings of Claude Monet, Pierre Auguste Renoir, Camille Pissarro, Alfred Sisley and Edgar Degas are among the most attractive, spontaneous and least complicated in European art. They show in bright, un-muddied colours the countryside and seaside resorts of France and the daily life of people relaxing in the cafés, theatres and pleasure gardens of Paris.
Denis Thomas illustrates the major Impres-sionist paintings in the 45 colour plates and 21 black and white pictures, and in tracing the course of this quiet revolution he looks in turn at each of the twelve principal artists who influenced, contributed to, or were influenced by Impressionism. Between them they pro-duced work which in the space of twenty years helped to change not only the course of Western painting but also the nature of the artist's relationship to his subject, his materials and himself.
